James Orsulak is a space-industry executive and TEDx speaker. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Business and Sales for Descartes Labs, a predictive intelligence company that is creating the first living atlas of the world. The firm developed a platform that applies machine learning to massive data sources like satellite and drone imagery, weather, marine AIS, and even subsurface geoscience data, resulting in better forecasting, monitoring and analysis of complex global supply chains. Prior to joining Descartes Labs, he served as the Vice President of Earth Observation at Planetary Resources, a space technology company seed funded by the founders of Google to enable resource extraction on Near-Earth asteroids and the Moon. He was responsible for the company’s thermal and hyperspectral imaging program and was also involved in the company’s consulting division, which focused on systems engineering for robotic mines in the gold and copper industry. Prior to joining Planetary Resources, he spent a decade developing large-scale fueling infrastructure projects in the energy industry. He was responsible for business development at Clean Energy, which provides fossil and renewable fuels for heavy-duty trucking fleets, the rail industry, space launch systems, and industrial applications. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University and a Precision Agriculture and Agronomy Certification from Purdue University.
